Directors Notes
If you are reading these notes expecting an explanation for why Pygmalion deserves another resurrection, what relevance it has to us today, why it has the lasting power it does, you will be disappointed. I don’t believe that a director’s notes should explain the production either before you watch it or afterwards. If a production can speak for itself, the director has achieved their aim and it shouldn’t need any explanation. Pygmalion is still as vibrant, as vital and as important as it ever was, and I have my own reasons for believing that. We offer this mighty play to you to find those reasons yourself. Classics endure because they talk across centuries, across cultures and across social divides. Our job is to listen to them. And this is a play with many a thing to say to us.
