WRITER & DIRECTOR
Presented by La Mama
La Mama (as part of 2010 Midsumma Festival), January 2010

Andrew is a playwright. He's just been dumped. He decides to write a play about it. Angus is his main character.
This should all be straight forward, except Angus refuses to play ball. It turns out writing Angus might be more difficult than Andrew expected.
A funny, bittersweet and unconventional story about breakups. the dangers of being a writer, and that L-word everyone seems to be so terrified of...

Directors Notes
If there is one thing I dislike writing more than ‘director’s notes’, it’s ‘writer’s notes’. This, unfortunately, has to be both. It is an awkward situation to have to explain yourself and the play, why you wrote it, what you are trying to say with it, justify the decisions you made. I’ve always thought that if you need to explain the play in your notes, you haven’t done your job properly. An audience should be able to judge the work on its own merits, not rely on someone giving them a briefing before they even know what it is you’re talking about. So I suppose I’ll just keep it simple.
Writing Angus is about break-ups and playwriting.
It’s a relatively straightforward play. It deals with issues and situations that anyone could understand. After all, what person doesn’t ‘get’ being stuck in that awful period after being dumped? I guess the only thing I hope is that you enjoy it. Isn’t that the point, to create something people will be entertained by, maybe moved or humored by? Isn’t that the tradition Homer started, sitting around campfires in Ancient Greece? Why Shakespeare made two teenagers fall in love and kill themselves? Why some guy with a beard took us back to a place a long time ago, to a galaxy far, far away?
So I guess all I need to say is, I hope you there is something in this show that touches a nerve for you in some way. I hope you laugh. I hope you find it ‘exciting’. And I hope you enjoy it. That is the job of a writer, after all...
